"If life throws you scraps, make a quilt"

Cosy Village: Fabric mosaic

Decide on the size you wish your article to be and plan accordingly.

  1. White or black cotton for background to give the effect of grout  between the mosaic bits.
  2. Fabric scraps in a large variety of colours and designs (not only plain colours). Different shades of more or less the same colour for a  colour wash effect.  Blocks are to be be cut into 1x1 inch pieces, so very small scraps will do.  Designs on fabric should preferably be  small.
  3. Fusible applique paper.
  4. Invisible yarn
  5. Backing of own choice. Can be added later.
  6. Optional but very handy is a sheet of polystyrene, a little bigger than your article for pinning particles onto. That way it is much easier to move bits around until you are satified with the result. And lots of pins of course!
  1. Creating a picture combining small units into a pleasing whole.
  2. Learn more about the use of colour and how colours influence each other.
  3. Balancing colours and design.
  4. Raw edge applique
  5. Finishing off  completed project.

It will save a lot of time if applique paper can be ironed onto fabric to be used as mosaic pieces.
Remove backing paper and cut into one inch squares. Decide approximately  how many will be needed of each colour.  If need be, more can be cut in class.
The layout is very time consuming, so the more prepared one comes, the better
